Tribal Truck Art - Pakistan
Truck Art is a traditional trend in Pakistan which is been going on for years, Men decorate there trucks to attract passengers. There trucks are like moving homes for them, After many years they have started using different kinds of materials, there designs have been developed from wood and paint to metal, reflective tapes and plastic. The trucks are fully embellished with lighting systems. I have had a great interest in this and I have been photographing different kind of trucks and Truck art related objects. I have been researching on this with the help of some books and the Internet.
There are some up coming Indian designers such as Deepak Perwani and Manish Arora who are highly inspired to Truck Art and have been show casing there work in London-Paris-Milan Fashion week. There mixing eastern and western fashion and creating designs and outfits that are very interesting and the use of bright colours is very eye catching. Many celebrities are also getting fascinated by this trend such as Katty Perry and Lady Gaga.
I also researched and came across " Anjum Rana " who runs an organisation to promote Tribal Truck Art and represents the new Pakistani woman, entrepreneurial, accomplished and creative. She is also an interior designer, who restores and reproduces antique furniture. With the help of that she has brought Truck Art into homes. She directs the truck art Painters in painting their richly textured motifs on everyday objects that are usually connected in some way with the everyday life of the truckers. Lamps, lanterns, mugs, kettles, trays, boxes, watering cans, buckets etc become collectable home accessories. The painters also have a new source of income.
